Pemmican

Learn about, make, and taste pemmican. Students will work through a series of stations to make pemmican and have the opportunity to taste pre-made pemmican, or to try the pemmican they made at a later date.

First Peoples Principle of Learning:

Learning recognizes the role of Indigenous knowledge.

Pemmican is a versatile and highly nutritious food that has been fueling people on the North American continent for over 5000 years. It’s easily accessible ingredients, high caloric content, and indefinite shelf-life made it a main staple of the fur trade voyageurs. Derived from the Cree word pimikin, pemmican production was a main industry for the Metis. In fact, it was the control of this highly valuable food source that ignited the Pemmican War (1812 – 1821) between the North West Company and the Hudson Bay Company, which involved many aggressions from both sides, and solidified the Metis as a unified people.
