Fall newsletter & the Indigenous Education Department Website
We are very excited to share the new Indigenous Education website and invite you to take some time to browse and learn about connections Revelstoke students have had with Elders and Knowledge Holders from the Sinixt, Secwépemc, Ktunaxa, and Sylix Okanagan Nations, to see some of the programming we have done in the past, and to learn more about the services and supports we offer. We will continually be updating this new resource, so we invite you to come back regularly. Link to Indigenous Education website
We have had another busy and wonderful start to 2024-2025 and would like to introduce you to the Indigenous Student Support staff in Revelstoke: Dylan Murray, Marlene Krug, and Lisa Moore, along with District Indigenous lead teacher Erin England, support Indigenous students culturally, socially, and academically, as well as offering season themed programming for Revelstoke classes two weeks of every month.
The activity for October, Habitat and Reciprocity, includes a nature walk and scavenger hunt through the trails at 6 mile. Students have
been introduced to the works of Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer and have been learning about the principles of the Honourable Harvest and Reciprocity at a grade appropriate level. In pairs, students have been harvesting long grass and learning braiding techniques to support their understanding of Sweetgrass, why it is a sacred medicine, and why it is commonly braided.

What does the Indigenous Education department do?
As well as supporting Indigenous students, the department offers monthly Indigenous-focused activities and field trips for classes K-12 that emphasize Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being and encourage Reconciliation. Check out the Program Highlights from 2023-2024 in the News section.
Self-Indentification
Each year we ask Indigenous families to self-identify their Indigeneity to the district to ensure we are supporting all students to the best of our ability. As this is a self-identification process, status cards and other forms of official documents are not required. The Indigenous Education Department plans their supports and activities based on the number of self-identified Indigenous students in the district. Parents can use the consent form on this website to give consent for support and services at anytime, or can reach out to their school Principal, or Jodi Wallach, District Principal of Indigenous Education and K-12 Wellbeing, to get more information.
